I would think twice about upgrading if it's just for the sake of PD2 though. Maybe you'll be able to watch YouTube while playing PD2 without it impacting your performance for example. That's not to say that a new CPU won't improve performance because it probably will since the per-core performance will probably be higher, and of course it'll help in other applications. That's also why upgrading your CPU might not be as effective as you'd think if you're at 50% with a quad, you'll probably just end up at 25% with an octa-core. Like I said, PD2 isn't good at utilizing multiple cores, so if a quad-core is running at 50%, it's essentially the equivalent of 2 cores running at 100%.

If you made the application run 4 separate threads with a busy wait on the other hand, you'd be seeing 100% utilization because the threads can use one core each.

If you make a simple application that consists of a busy wait, this will eat up all the CPU resources it can, but if you check the utilization on a quad core, it'll show up as 25% (which is 100% of 1 core). The CPU utilization you see is generally aggregated over all your cores, though I can't speak for Afterburner in particular. However, in the menus my GPU usage is up in the 90% range and I get ~130 fps. Still not full usage, and I still have to run on low settings, but it's an improvement. After restarting the game with chrome closed, I'm up to about 60% GPU/CPU usage, and hitting 60+fps. I had youtube playing when I first started the game, and chrome/youtube normally kills my fps, so I eventually closed it, but nothing changed. Payday 2 doesn't show up in nVidia control pannel, but my global setting is set to prefer maximal performance.Įdit: There seems to be a problem with resource allocation.

I'm starting to wonder how accurate afterburner is now, because as I'm typing this I just noticed that without any games open, afterburner is showing 0% CPU usage, but task manager shows anywhere from 10-30%. I decied to check with MSI afterburner, and it shows I'm only hitting about 50% CPU usage and 30% GPU usage. Lately they seem to have gotten worse, especially on Shadow Raid. I'm getting low framerates in Payday 2 and always thought it was just my crappy CPU.
